Generals commanding a combined ground and air force from several Arab countries told reporters on Monday that they are poised to retake the Yemeni capital city of Sa’ana from the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels even as analysts warned that a combination of ongoing civil war and environmental degradation have brought the country to the brink of collapse. Nearly 20 million people in the impoverished country are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance with aid workers warning of a famine of Biblical proportions. “We hope people make a compromise before what’s left of Yemen is destroyed,” said Yemeni General Abed Rabbo Qassem Al Shaddadi. “We are optimistic, but we don’t have faith in the Houthis, and we will triumph no matter what.”
