What is up Albuquerque? Only about 8% of voters went to the polls yesterday! How on earth does just 8% come out to vote? This is not good, this is not American! It’s a very basic, fundamental duty of citizens, to VOTE! So 92% of the eligible voters in Albuquerque just do not care??!!??!! When Sharon and I went to vote at LBJ Middle School, around 5:30pm, there were maybe five other people voting! Even though our councilor Dan Lewis was not up for re-election, there were important issues on the ballot, proposed tax increases and also whether the City Council should have a say on the appointment of the Police Chief and Fire Chief. I think that is a very important issue, I voted that the council should have a say, not just the Mayor! Is this 8% show up an indication that people have given up on Berry and the council and the City? Do the people think that it does not matter “what they think”? Do the people beleive that all is lost to crime and violence? Do the people think their taxes will increase no matter what? I know the city is having a very exciting time right now with the Balloon Fiesta, but it soon will be over and the city will come back to the hard reality that Albuquerque has a number of severe problems. These problems will not be solved with just 8% of voters doing their duty! This is so unpatriotic! Shame.
I took this picture at LBJ Middle School last night around 5:30pm to show you how empty it was!
Some more thoughts after posting this……I told Sharon we were taught in the 6th grade that it was our duty to vote, to have a say on how our government is run. She said, “WE were taught that!”
The Albuquerque Journal is reporting this morning that City Councilor Ken Sanchez is leading an effort to $1.3 million dollars for Police Officer raises. What do you think? Do you care?
City government has severe problems in Albuquerque and the School District is a mess, what is today’s scandal? the school board is a disaster, and one of the key reasons is low voter turnout, people just don’t care, if they did, they would vote, or run for office themselves.
If you are eligible to vote, and you do not vote, you have no right to complain.
