The United States of America is overweight when compared to the Americas, Europe and much of Asia according to study done every two years. In fact, since 2000 the number of obese Americans has risen to a staggering 35% despite efforts by President Obama and mayors in cutting salt and sugar in the fight against fat.
So what gives? The First Lady has made it her goal in life to end childhood obesity by removing all flavor and nutritional value from school lunches and still we lead the world in being big boned.
Believe it or not, there are biblical principles at work here that we ignore at our own peril. First there is the principle of “if a man does not work, he should not eat”. The number of people getting some form of government money is greater than ever before and the unemployment rate including the nonparticipating approaches half the population.

Next, America was dedicated to the Lord at it’s founding under our current constitution, like it or not. Don’t think that is true, just read President Washington’s inaugural address. Because that is true, Deuteronomy 8 applies that when we are full and satisfied we should bless the name of the Lord.
Otherwise, we ignore God in our thinking and start to think we gave ourselves all that we have and forget to thank the Lord. This leads to whole host of problems not the least of which is getting fat, dumb and happy.
As a result we, as a nation, give ourselves over to gluttony and drunkenness, laziness and debauchery and we become borrowers instead of lenders and open ourselves to invasion by the stranger and ecological disasters.
Sound familiar? Obesity is just another symptom of America’s disease and no amount of dieting or taking control of school lunches will remedy the problem because what is spiritual must proceed that which is physical.
