NM Governor Susana Martinez Appoints Judge Judith Nakamura to New Mexico Supreme Court

Santa Fe, NM — Today, Governor Susana Martinez announced the appointment of Second Judicial District Court Judge Judith Nakamura to the New Mexico Supreme Court, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Richard C. Bosson. Nakamura brings a combined 17 years of judicial and 26 years of legal experience to the Supreme Court.

“Judge Nakamura has shown tremendous leadership and dedication during her time on the bench. As an advocate for public safety, she has a proven track record of working to keep our families safe,” said Governor Martinez. “I’m proud to appoint her to our highest court because she has devoted her career to upholding justice, and I’m confident she will continue to serve New Mexico with integrity.”

Nakamura was elected to the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court in 1998, where she was chief judge from 2002 until her appointment to the Second Judicial District Court in 2013. She has also served on multiple committees that advise the Supreme Court on matters such as budgeting, as well as on the Supreme Court’s Chief Judges Council from 2002 to 2012, and was named Outstanding Judge of the Year by the Albuquerque Bar Association in 2004. In 2006, Mothers Against Drunk Driving honored Judge Nakamura with the National President’s Award for Judge of the Year for her efforts to combat DWI in New Mexico. She is also a former small business owner, and is active in the community serving on the Board of Directors of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta since 2011.

Prior to her election to the Metro Court in 1998, Nakamura spent nine years as an attorney working for a private law firm and the State Land Office. She holds both a Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctorate from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
