Freedom of speech and freedom of religion are tricky things in a politically correct world. After all, freedom can be offensive so it must be controlled and regulated right?
A pastor in Northern Ireland is about to be put on trial for calling Islam a religion “spawned in hell” and “satanic” and he is calling on his countrymen and fellow Christians to rally to his support.
At issue is the limitation of free speech by a law that restricts that speech when it is “grossly offensive” and then broadcast. Pastor James McConnell, who is 78, stated in his sermon that, “Islam’s ideas about God, about humanity, about salvation are vastly different from the teaching of the holy scriptures. Islam is heathen. Islam is satanic. Islam is a doctrine spawned in hell.”
Should pastors in this age of diminishing freedoms be allowed to say such things about the world’s fastest growing religion? Is it wrong for a pastor to say such things about Islam?
Not only is it right for a preacher of the gospel to proclaim Islam a religion of the anti-Christ, it is required by the Lord to challenge the doctrines of demons.
Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.
1 John 2:22
The Apostle John made clear that anyone who says that Jesus is not the Son of God is of anti-Christ, that he teaches the doctrine of demons and that is exactly what Islam teaches, that God has no son.
Christians have every right to oppose any religion as false, just as Islam has every right to call Christianity false, but we are to allow them the freedom to do so without violence, just as we should.
Freedom of speech is offensive, but as long as it does not raise false alarm in a crowded theater we are allowed to preach the gospel, because after all it is an offense to those who are perishing.
