Russian warplane shot down after repeated warnings

Turkish officials said fighter jets downed a plane near the Syrian border on Tuesday after allegedly alerting it over air space violations.

Turkish F-16s in action _Illustrative_Reports emerged on Tuesday that Turkish F-16 fighter aircraft had shot down a Russian Su-24 bomber after it violated Turkish airspace while flying a mission near the northern border of Syria. Turkey says it issued several warnings to the Russian plane that it was in the wrong airspace before the Turksih aircraft opened fire. Both Russian pilots reportedly bailed out of the aircraft before it crashed and one was reportedly captured by a rebel faction on the ground. The incident comes at a time of heightened air activity in the skies over Syria as jets from Russia, France, the US and a handful of other countries continued to pound the Islamic State (IS) terror militia.
