The US involvement in Syria’s multifaceted civil war appears to be deepening with a report this week that the Pentagon has deployed six more F-15C air-to-air combat aircraft to the Incirlik Air Base in southern Turkey, with Turkish officials saying they are meant to defend Turkish airspace. The comments follow incidents last month in which Russian aircraft deployed to defend the Assad regime in Syria locked their targeting radars on Turkish aircraft patrolling the border and even briefly violated Turkish airspace in what the Kremlin said was a weather-related mistake. “We will continue to work closely with our Turkish partners on supporting the sovereignty of Turkish airspace and our shared efforts to degrade and destroy ISIL,” said a statement from US European Command in Stuttgart.
