Israelis celebrate a joyous Hanukkah season

An Israeli child places the candles in the Hanukia _ICEJ Staff photograph_Israelis of all religious backgrounds marked the ancient festival of Hanukkah this past week by lighting candles and coming together for large family meals including traditional foods like potato latkes and suvganiote (doughnuts). Children enjoyed playing the dreidal game and receiving the traditional bags of chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil and politicians took a break from the regular grind of factional politics to attend parties and candle lighting ceremonies in an atmosphere of goodwill. The Israeli Football League did its part to contribute to the fun with the traditional season opening “Hanukkah Bowl” played between the Judean Rebels and the Jerusalem Lions on the Thursday evening of the 8-day holiday.
