Russia and Turkey escalate war of words
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reacted angrily Monday to accusations by Russia President Vladimir Putin that Turkey shot down a Russian warplane near the Syrian border last month to protect the illicit oil trade with the Islamic State terror militia. Declaring that he would resign if the allegations could be proven, Erdogan added that if they were proven false, Putin should resign. The days back and forth comments to reporters at the Climate Change conference in Paris represented a significant escalation of the simmering war of words between the two leaders, with Putin pointedly snubbing a request from Erdogan for a meeting. Erdogan did meet Monday with US President Barak Obama who urged him to find ways for “Turkey and Russia can work together to deescalate tensions and find a diplomatic path to resolve the issue,” according to Obama, who added that IS is the main problem.
