The Price of Cake and the Tyranny of the State

Freedom and the right to choose faith in Jesus Christ, who would’ve thought that these things would be tied to wedding cakes and really who knew that the state had the right to empty your bank accounts if you didn’t bake one?

You might remember Melissa and Aaron Klein owners of Sweet Cakes Bakery in Oregon. They were forced to pay a lesbian couple $136,927.07 for refusing to make a wedding cake, they were willing to make any other type of cake for either of the women just not a wedding cake.

The Kleins decided that paying the money now would be cheaper as they appealed the state labor agency ruling to the Supreme Court if necessary, but the Christian bakers had another shock coming beyond the revelation that sexual depravity supersedes religious freedom and the constitution.

Just before Christmas, according to an article by Todd Starnes, Melissa Klein discovered that the state of Oregon had taken an additional $7,000 from their accounts including an account earmarked for tithes labeled “God’s Money”.

Oregon’s Bureau of Labor and Industries had confiscated all the cash in Mrs. Klein’s checking account and savings account as well as the special account for tithes.

The United States of America has been slowly creeping toward tyranny but now we are moving with greater speed towards totalitarianism. It is hard to say at what point so many agencies obtain the right to confiscate private funds but it did start with the IRS. The recent bill passed by Congress for the budget added to the Internal Revenue Service’s already frightening power by giving them the right to take people’s passports, but at what point that American citizens lose the right to a warrant and the ability to redress grievances?

It is becoming all too clear that we have lost so much more freedom and liberty than what we first realized. America is becoming a police state where godless liberals have every right to punish citizens for their faith in Jesus Christ. Because we have not stood against their power in the past, it may be too late to take it away from them now.

I believe that is why those who love tyranny over freedom are making the next battle about guns, because as our founders understood an armed citizenry is the best defense against a tyrannical government.

It is our right as Americans to choose faith in Jesus Christ and to live out that faith in our everyday lives, Melissa and Aaron Klein have attempted to do just that by refusing to use their business to promote depravity.

While a great number of Christian Americans donated money to help them pay the fines the state imposed, we had not seen the citizens of Oregon stand up to the tyranny of Oregon’s bureau of labor and industries. There was no march on the Capitol steps and there was no outcry of phone calls and emails to the governor or the legislature to force the agency to cease-and-desist.

How much more tyranny will we allow in our country? How much longer will believers in Jesus Christ remain silent while others fight for their freedom? How much longer will good men do nothing and allow evil to flourish?
