Syria to be discussed at UN Security Council
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was set to chair a meeting of the United Nations Security Council Friday as part of the latest push to end the multi-faceted civil war in Syria. The US initiative, which includes the “eventual” departure of President Bashar Assad, gained the support of Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, but he added the caveat that “In the attempt to solve the conflict that has continued for many years, a compromise is always possible, but concessions must be made on both sides.” Meanwhile, other parties to the conflict including Iran, Turkey and terror militias such as Al-Qaida and the Islamic State (IS) have given various statements about their own terms for ending the conflict, none of which appear to be reconcilable.
