ICEJ NEWS:
China expanding footprint in the Middle East
Chinese President Xi Jinping continued his Middle East tour on Thursday with a visit to Cairo where he signed several agreements with the regime of President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi. The agreements will see billions of dollars in Chinese aid and investment flowing into Egypt, a development viewed with mixed feelings in Israel as it will help to stabilize the Jewish State’s southern neighbor but also weaken the influence of Israel’s Western allies in Egypt and the broader Middle East. During his regional tour, Xi has also announced massive amounts of Chinese investments in various infrastructure projects as well as training programs for police and other civil agencies in various Arab countries. He will be in Teheran for meetings with Iranian officials over the weekend.
