Congressman Pearce’s Statement to Obama’s Latest Freeze on Coal Industry

Washington, DC (January 15, 2016) Congressman Steve Pearce (NM-02) issued the following statement after the Obama administration announced major changes to the federal coal program and froze new coal leases on federal land:

“Today, Obama renewed his war on the middle class and blue collar jobs by unilaterally acting to deny Americans access to affordable energy. Coal provides jobs and keeps the lights on for thousands of New Mexicans. What the Administration did today will hurt hardworking Americans more than the radicals who insist on President Obama’s actions.  We should be focused on making America energy abundant and bringing manufacturing jobs back to our shores instead of allowing the President to hold our resources hostage.  Pausing the federal leasing program will cost jobs and revenue that could go to schools, bridges, and roads.  Americans should not have to bear the brunt of the President’s war on affordable energy. I will continue fighting back so New Mexicans’ have access to low-cost energy sources that keep the lights on, food on the table, and their homes warm,” said Congressman Steve Pearce.

According to the United States Energy Information Administration, Coal-fired power plants supply almost two-thirds of New Mexico’s net electricity generation. Currently, about 40% of U.S. coal comes from federal land.  The moratorium will last three years while the Administration conducts studies as to the environmental and public health impact of coal production.
