FGGAM NEWS JUST RECEIVED THIS:
House Republicans Call on Senate Democrats to Discuss Driver’s License Compromise
Santa Fe, NM – House Speaker Don Tripp sent a follow-up letter to Senators Mary Kay Papen and Michael Sanchez today asking them to meet to discuss a compromise proposed by the House that would stop the dangerous practice of giving driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants and bring New Mexico into compliance with the Real ID Act.
Here is the letter:
January 6, 2016
The Honorable Mary Kay Papen The Honorable Michael Sanchez
President Pro Tem Majority Floor Leader
New Mexico Senate New Mexico Senate
105 State Capitol 3 Bunton Road
Santa Fe, NM 87505 Belen, NM 87002
Dear Senators Papen and Sanchez,
I am writing to follow up on the letter I sent on January 4, 2016 regarding our proposal for legislation
that will stop the dangerous practice of giving driver’s licenses to people who have entered this country
in violation of federal laws and bring New Mexico’s driver’s licenses into compliance with the federal
REAL ID Act. Given the urgency of the pending January 10, 2016 expiration of the waiver granted by DHS
and the impact it will have on thousands of New Mexicans who will no longer be able to use a New
Mexico driver’s license to access federal facilities, I believe it is important to meet as soon as possible to
discuss a bill that could receive the necessary support to be enacted into law, address the public safety
issues associated with our current law, and bring New Mexico’s Driver’s Licenses into compliance with
the REAL ID Act.
Our team stands ready to meet with you at your earliest possible convenience. Please let me know
when you would like to meet to discuss this issue.
Sincerely,
Don Tripp
Speaker
NM House of Representatives
