Governor Susana Martinez Appoints Scott Weaver as Cabinet Secretary for the Department of Public Safety
Santa Fe, NM — Today, Governor Susana Martinez announced her appointment of Scott Weaver as secretary for the New Mexico Department of Public Safety (DPS). Weaver has more than two decades of law enforcement experience, serving as a New Mexico State Police officer from 1994 to 2015, prior to his appointment as deputy secretary of DPS by Governor Martinez. His appointment follows the departure of former DPS Secretary Greg Fouratt, who recently stepped down to become a U.S. magistrate judge in Las Cruces.
“As a former prosecutor whose father and husband were also law enforcement officers, I know that Scott’s background as a leader of our State Police will serve him well in this new role,” Governor Martinez said. “The dedication, leadership, and accomplishments that Scott has shown throughout his career in public safety demonstrate that he is prepared to lead DPS, and I’m confident he will continue to help make New Mexico’s families and communities safer.”
As deputy secretary, Weaver managed the internationally accredited New Mexico Forensic Laboratories in Santa Fe, Las Cruces, and Hobbs. This is an area of particular importance to Governor Martinez, who has spent her entire career protecting children, putting criminals like rapists and abusers behind bars, and advocating for victims. She fought hard to pass “Katie’s Law” in New Mexico, expanded it as Governor, and now more DNA evidence is being used to solve rape, sexual assault, murder, and other violent crimes.
Weaver also administered the Law Enforcement Records Bureau, the Information Technology Division, the Administrative Services Bureau, and the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy.
Throughout his career, Weaver has been a part of several high-profile criminal cases, managed Drug Enforcement Task Forces, instructed advanced training in New Mexico and Florida, managed federal grants, directed city, county, and state police promotional processes, managed the State Police southern criminal and narcotics bureaus, directed two successful CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies) re-accreditations, served as the chairman of two region task force boards, and was a member of the New Mexico HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area) executive board.
During his career with the New Mexico State Police, Weaver served as a patrolman, a narcotics agent, and a member of the Dive Team, eventually attaining the rank of major. As a major, he commanded the Internal Affairs and Research and Development Bureaus, and served as the agency’s drug abuse coordinator.
Weaver is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.
