Governor Susana Martinez Orders Flags Flown at Half-Staff in Honor and Memory of Navajo Code Talker Bill Toledo

Santa Fe, NM — Today, Governor Susana Martinez issued an executive order for flags to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Tuesday, May 10, 2016, in honor and memory of Navajo Code Talker Bill Toledo.

The text of the order is below:

EXECUTIVE ORDER 2016-06
FLAGS FLOWN AT HALF-STAFF IN HONOR AND MEMORY OF NAVAJO CODE TALKER BILL TOLEDO

     WHEREAS, Bill Toledo, one of the last surviving Navajo Code Talkers, passed away on Thursday, May 5, 2016 at the age of 92; and

     WHEREAS, Toledo enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served with the 3rd Marine Division in the Pacific Theater at Cape Gloucester, Bougainville, Iwo Jima, Guam, and New Zealand; and

     WHEREAS, He was also a member of the Navajo Code Talker Association who took an active role in helping to tell the story of how the Code Talkers used the Navajo language to help defeat the Axis Powers during World War II; and

     WHEREAS, Bill Toledo is survived by his daughter Sharon of Grants, New Mexico, two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren;

     NOW, THEREFORE, I, Susana Martinez, Governor of the State of New Mexico, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the State of New Mexico, do hereby order that all flags be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Tuesday, May 10, 2016, the day Bill Toledo is laid to rest. The thoughts and prayers of all New Mexicans go out to his family and friends, along with heartfelt gratitude for his service.
