Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon made history on Monday by being elected chairman of the UN Legal Committee, the first time an Israeli has assumed that position since Israel was admitted to the UN in 1949. The appointment came despite fierce opposition to the idea from the self-described Non-Aligned Movement and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation as well as several governments.
