Governor Susana Martinez Orders Flags Flown at Half-Staff in Honor and Mourning of Hatch Police Officer Jose Chavez

Santa Fe, NM — Today, Governor Susana Martinez issued an executive order for flags to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 in honor and mourning of Hatch Police Officer Jose Chavez.

The full text of the executive order is below.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 2016-025
FLAGS FLOWN AT HALF-STAFF IN HONOR AND MOURNING OF HATCH POLICE OFFICER JOSE CHAVEZ

     WHEREAS, Hatch Police Officer Jose Chavez was killed during a traffic stop on Friday, August 12, 2016; and

     WHEREAS, Officer Chavez was a two-year veteran of the Hatch Police Department with a record of dedicated service to his community; and

     WHEREAS, this senseless killing is yet another example of how law enforcement officers face danger every day as they work to make communities safer; and

     WHEREAS, Officer Chavez is survived by his two children, Aryam and Jannely, his mother Maria, father Jose, Sr., and many family and friends; and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Susana Martinez, Governor of the State of New Mexico, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the State of New Mexico, do hereby order that all flags be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Wednesday, August 17, 2016, in honor and mourning of Officer Chavez’s service and sacrifice. The thoughts and prayers of the people of New Mexico go out to his family, along with our heartfelt gratitude for his service.
