Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan was in Russia Tuesday for a summit with President Vladimir Putin during which both men pledged to bring their countries closer together following a period of tensions and opposing policies in Syria and other parts of the Middle East. “Both have good reasons to mend fences,” said Kristian Brakel, an Istanbul-based analyst. “Both are in economic difficulty and both are looking for a counterbalance to the West.”
