Capital Prayer Alert

As you know, my wife, Carol, prepares a prayer alert about once a month. I hope you will share Carol’s thoughts with your friends and fellow worshippers. Thank you for taking an interest in her monthly devotion. — GaryWhat a difference a month makes! The most unpredictable presidential race in history has continued to confound the experts. The byword of this season could be “expect the unexpected.”

Since my last Prayer Alert, millions of dollars have been spent on candidate advertising, numerous rallies have been held, candidate health has become a major area of voter interest, the debates are upon us. . . and the election which experts were willing to call for one candidate has become a horse race with a major shift in momentum.

The debate on Monday night should be worthy of popcorn eating, edge-of-your-seat entertainment, which if it weren’t free could be a huge pay-per-view moneymaker!

But hanging over all the interest and excitement of the campaign is a palpable sense of unease in the country. Unrest in a number of cities accompanied by growing crime rates, a widening divide based on race or party and nearly stagnate economic growth leading to a sense of helplessness all contribute to what feels like a chronic illness in the body politic. Though the presidential election is weeks away, it just feels like we are not in a good place as a country. Our sense of confidence in the future and in ourselves as a people has been eroded.

Please pray to God for the health of our country in these challenging days. Pray that those seeking to lead this land would turn to Him for guidance and strength. Though the demands of campaigning must be overwhelming and exhausting, pray that those who seek to chart our country’s course would remember the Lord’s role in guiding the United States from its founding forward.

Ask the Lord to heal our land so that we may focus on the values that unite us. Thank our Heavenly Father for those who are having a spiritual impact on candidates running for office. Pray for the safety of the candidates and those who protect them. Ask God to prompt each citizen to vote with the future of the country and their children and grandchildren uppermost in their mind.

Churches across the country are organizing voter registration and education drives. The major party candidates could not be more different on issues relating to religious liberty and the role of the Supreme Court. If you are a man or woman of faith, you have a critical role to play in shaping the next few decades of life in these United States.

Your family’s opportunity to practice their faith and define their economic future will be shaped by the outcome of the election. There have been recent elections when some would say there was so little difference between the candidates that they saw no reason to vote. Not so this time around. After a grueling primary process in both parties, it is down to two major party candidates.

Your voice is about to be heard!

Pray

Please go to our Heavenly Father in humility and obedience. Seek His guidance as to how you should view the electoral choices. Remember the words of II Chronicles 7:11:

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

As you pray in this way, remember that it is God’s people who are being called upon to act and to take responsibility.

Share

If you receive this message, you are someone who is interested in the intersection of faith and politics. Those around you in your workplace, neighborhood church or school see you in that light. Perhaps they are disillusioned, angry, without hope for our electoral process or ill-informed about all that is at stake.

Ask the Lord to give you the opportunity and the words to share your heart, to open their eyes and to explain in terms they would understand and appreciate what is at stake for their family and the nation.

Vote

The above steps mean nothing if you do not vote. As registration deadlines approach, make sure you and those with whom you are communicating are registered.

Have you moved? Update your address so you know where to vote on Election Day.

Will you be unavailable to vote on Election Day? Take advantage of early voting opportunities.

Know an elderly person or young mother who would like to vote but may not be able to get to the polls? Offer a ride or a short time with the mother’s children so she can vote. Participate in Get-Out-The-Vote efforts in your area.

Thank you for humbly seeking the Lord’s guidance and then acting. Our right to vote is a precious responsibility which requires little sacrifice on our part but demanded the ultimate sacrifice by those who came before us. Let us honor them with our involvement.
