Fighting For Our Values

I’m on the road this week carrying our conservative message every place I can. I just spent a great evening in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, speaking at the Family Heritage Alliance’s annual banquet.

There was a tremendous turnout, which included dozens of state legislators, representatives from the state’s congressional offices, as well as statewide officeholders. Congratulations to Dale Bartscher, executive director of the Family Heritage Alliance, who is doing an outstanding job fighting for faith, family and freedom in South Dakota!

Among the issues I addressed last night was the growing danger of radical Islam in America. And I’m not just referring to terrorism, which is a deadly problem. (See next item.) But I also addressed the larger issue of why we are not trying to do more to discern whether the people we are allowing into the country are full of hatred toward Christians, Jews and Western culture.

Some on the left argue that there is a global right for people all over the world to immigrate to America. It is no secret that many of our elites support the concept of “open borders.” And while America is a generous nation, founded by immigrants and with a long history of welcoming immigrants, the notion of open borders defies human history as well as common sense.

The Pew Research Center surveyed Muslims in 39 countries around the world. More than half, 55%, said they wanted Sharia or Islamic law to govern their countries.

Pew also found that a significant percentage of Muslims surveyed in 11 countries had a favorable opinion of ISIS. In fact, only 28% of those surveyed in Pakistan said they had an “unfavorable” view of the Islamic State.

“A Terrorist Diaspora”

We had better muster the moral courage and political will to take control of our immigration policies very soon. Yesterday, the nation’s top domestic security officials testified before Congress. Among them was FBI Director James Comey.

Comey was confident that ISIS would be crushed on the battlefield and lose its caliphate. But he issued this warning:

“The so-called caliphate will be crushed. Through the fingers of that crush will come hundreds of very dangerous people. There will be a terrorist diaspora sometime in the next two to five years like we’ve never seen before.”
As we have seen from events in Fort Hood, Chattanooga, San Bernardino, Orlando, St. Cloud and New York City, the jihadists are already here. Why on earth would anyone fight efforts to prevent more jihadists from coming here?

(By the way, seven Afghans training at U.S. military bases have disappeared in recent days.)

The truth is, we have acted “radically” in the past to control our borders and make tough decisions about who we allow into our country.

  • In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt, a Republican, called on Congress to “deal radically and efficiently with polygamy.” The Immigration Act of 1907 prohibited “polygamists, or persons who admit their belief in the practice of polygamy” from entering the country.
  • In 1979, President Jimmy Carter, a Democrat, banned Iranians from entering the country and deported thousands who were already here.

    The U.N. Says. . .

The United Nations is the gift that keeps on giving. Here’s the latest: According to a working group that reports to the U.N. High Commissioner on Human Rights, the United States — meaning you the American taxpayer — owes reparations for slavery.

Here are a few highlights from the report. [TRIGGER WARNING: The language here may cause some of you to be highly offended. Prepare your safe places now.]

“The colonial history, the legacy of enslavement, racial subordination and segregation, racial terrorism, and racial inequality in the U.S. remains a serious challenge as there has been no real commitment to reparations and to truth and reconciliation for people of African descent. Despite substantial changes since the end of the enforcement of Jim Crow and the fight for civil rights, ideology ensuring the domination of one group over another, continues to negatively impact the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of African Americans today.

“The dangerous ideology of white supremacy inhibits social cohesion amongst the US population. Lynching was a form of racial terrorism that has contributed to a legacy of racial inequality that the U.S. must address. Thousands of people of African descent were killed in violent public acts of racial control and domination and the perpetrators were never held accountable.

“Contemporary police killings and the trauma it creates are reminiscent of the racial terror lynching of the past. Impunity for state violence has resulted in the current human rights crisis and must be addressed as a matter of urgency. . .

“During this country visit, the experts observed the excessive control and supervision targeting all levels of their life. This control since September 2001, has been reinforced by the introduction of the Patriot Act. . . The state is also not acting with due diligence to protect the rights of African American communities, as evidenced by the lack of gun control and stand your ground laws, among others. . .

“The Working Group was also concerned that voter ID laws with increased identification requirements in several states served to discriminate minorities such as African Americans contrary to the spirit of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.”
Keep in mind this is a critique of a country that has had an African American president for eight years, attorneys general for eight years and in which the overwhelming majority of African Americans live lives that would be the envy of most of those in Africa.

President Barack Obama should be rushing to condemn this report, especially given its incredibly obnoxious claim that there has been “no real commitment to truth and reconciliation.”

This report makes it sound as if lynchings are a daily occurrence. It equates law enforcement with “racial terror,” suggests that efforts to protect the country from terrorism and voter ID laws are somehow racist, and it attacks our Second Amendment rights and commonsense measures meant to protect law-abiding citizens.

The U.N. working group recommended the implementation of a left-wing wish list to address all the alleged sins and flaws it found, including passage of reparations legislation that has attracted a grand total of two co-sponsors in the House of Representatives.

Reading this distorted picture of American life begs the question: Why is even one dime of American tax money going to this putrid institution?
