Many are saying that Donald Trump is making it hard for Evangelical Christians. That is not true at all; Evangelical Christians are making it difficult. There have been “Donald Trump’s” in the world all along, and worse. God has called Christians to be in the world, but not of the world. In other words, we have to live here among all sorts of people, but we do not have to be as they are. However, sometimes, in order to survive within the organized structures of society, we must use the people within that structure, warts and all.
One time I desperately needed a hammer to fix a situation I had. No other tool that I had would have done the job; I needed a hammer. In my search for a hammer, all I could come up with was an old, rusty, splintered hammer; a disgrace to any carpenter. I would have been ashamed for anyone to see me with that hammer. Nevertheless, after making sure that no one would see me with that old hammer, I used it to change my situation of need. As ugly as that old hammer was, it got the job done. I still have that hammer as a reminder.
No, I do not like the tools of choice we have in our toolbox right now, but we, as Americans are broke and need fixing. I am going with an old splintery hammer.
