Pearce Statement on Paris Climate Deal
Washington, DC (October 7, 2016) – Congressman Pearce issued the following statement after President Obama unilaterally bypassed the United States Constitution by signing the Paris climate deal this week. The deal itself will eliminate the demand for reliable sources of energy and attempt to replace them with less reliable and more expensive energy sources. It will place the financial burden on the shoulders of the American taxpayer who will be forced to pay increased electric rates as well as increased taxes in order to finance alternative energy sources like, wind and solar both here and overseas. The deal, agreed to by over fifty-five countries, is set to enter into force on November 4th. This agreement should be ratified by the United States Senate however, the Obama Administration is moving forward with no regard for the Constitutional process.
“Once again, President Obama is attempting to implement his extreme agenda by unilaterally bypassing the Constitution by signing a treaty without the consent of the United States Senate. It is clear that appeasing special interest groups is more important to the President than American jobs or economic well-being.
“The Paris climate agreement is a bad deal for New Mexico and is a bad deal for our country. New Mexico has played an integral role in making energy abundant and affordable across the nation. This will be a devastating blow to our war against poverty as those living paycheck to paycheck will not only see increased costs on their electric bills and at the pump, but will also be affected by decreased funding for schools, hospitals, and law enforcement in our local communities.
“I have fought in the House to make it easier to plan for the future, improve our schools, and to make it easier for people to get back on their feet. Just like in 2010, when President Obama, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi attempted to pass their job-destroying cap and trade proposal, now the President is trying once again to push an agenda that will cost jobs and increase the cost of living for everyday Americans. Back then, Congress stopped him. This time is no different, and I will continue to fight for New Mexico jobs. If only the President attacked ISIS or our growing debt with the same amount of determination as he shows on burdening the middle class, we would be much better off,” said Congressman Pearce.
