What tools help when suffering with exhaustion, depression or both?

Our physical and emotional condition can be significantly impacted by our thoughts and our words.

Our thoughts and words relay signals to our brain, prompting the creation of brain chemicals that impact and effect our physical as well as emotional condition.

Scripture tells us to take control of our thoughts.

“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:3-5

When we take our thoughts captive and set our minds on things above, we give attention to those thoughts that resemble God’s thoughts.

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Philippians 4:6-8

We transform ourselves by renewing our minds with God’s word.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2

When dealing with depression, exhaustion or both, pay attention to these three factors in your control.

1. Sleep. Set a consistent sleep schedule. Go to bed around the same time every night. And, wake up around the same time each morning. Every day, even on the weekends. Daytime naps impact your natural sleep rhythm and hinder your sleep at night. Avoid daytime naps.

2. Diet. Are you eating protein at each of your three meals? Not eating enough protein negatively effects your ability to function at an optimal level physically, emotionally and cognitively.

3. Exercise. At least 15 minutes per day of exercise improves your energy level as well as your emotional and cognitive functioning.

Praise changes your perspective and lifts your spirits, despite your circumstances.

Keep your focus on God. Give Him praise.

“Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again—my Savior and my God!” Psalm 42:11
