Grim Estimates Emerge of Damage from Forest Fires

Official estimates began to come in Tuesday of how extensive the damage from the recent fires in Israel actually was. Approximately 3,035 hectares (7,500 acres) of forests and 1,090 hectares (2,700 acres) of urban areas have been destroyed in several communities, according to Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael-Jewish National Fund’s firefighting services.

Tensions Rise as Amona Evacuation Looms

Tensions are mounting over the scheduled demolition Wednesday of the outpost of Amona in the West Bank. Religious-Zionist rabbis issued a call Monday for “non-violent resistance” measures to be taken to prevent the demolition while residents of the outpost have vowed they will not evacuate their homes under any conditions. The Israeli Supreme Court ordered the outpost demolished earlier this year after it was established that it had been built on land privately owned by Palestinians.

Guatemalan President Arrives in Israel

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales, an outspoken evangelical Christian, arrived in Israel Monday for an official state visit. “I want to thank you, Mr. President, for your personal support and for the support of your country for Israel on the international stage,” Israeli President Reuven Rivlin told his guest. On Tuesday Morales met with PM Netanyahu.

American-Israeli solar pioneer Yosef Abramowitz, known as “Captain Sunshine” for his promotion of solar energy projects in Israel, has added wind power to his portfolio of specialties and is set to launch a massive $50 million project in Africa in the coming months. “As African countries are planning their energy programs, we want to prevent any plans for burning fossil fuels from coming about by giving green and inexpensive alternatives,” Abramowitz said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed a Likud Party meeting Monday evening regarding the rockets fired into Israel the day before by the Islamic State (IS) terror militia and Israel’s response.
