Nearly 200,000 people remained under evacuation orders Monday as California authorities try to fix erosion of the emergency spillway at the nation’s tallest dam that could unleash uncontrolled flood waters if it fails.

“The time frame that we were dealing with at that point was mere hours. I couldn’t risk the lives of thousands of people,” Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told reporters after a hole formed in an emergency spillway at the Oroville Dam in Northern California. Authorities began using the emergency spillway after a 200-foot long, 30-foot-deep fissure formed in the dam’s primary relief valve last week. Officials have evacuation orders in place for the residents below the spillway of the Oroville Dam, one of the nation’s largest dams. Multiple communities including Marysville, Hallwood, Ollivehurst, Plumas Lake, Wheatland, Live Oak, Yuba City, Nicolaus and all communities of Feather River Yuba City Basin, are in the evacuation order. The spillway is in immanent danger of failing according to the news. Roads out of Oroville area are congested with people trying to leave.
