NM Legislature News: Assisted Suicide Bill Approved By House Health and Human Services Committee
Pastor Dewey Moede
New Mexico Watchman Jose Vasquez reports: HB 171 allows medical care providers to assist the killing of patients without legal ramifications.
The bill is titled End of Life Options Act: House Bill 171, Rep. Deborah Armstrong, Albuquerque and Rep. Bill McCamley, Mesilla Park.
Following the New Mexico Supreme Court failure to find Physician-Assisted-Suicide unconstitutional, the State Legislature has now taking steps to make the act legal. House Bill 171 removes all criminal liability for assisting patients in killing themselves.
Today HB 171 passed the Health and Human Committee, with all the Republicans voting against it and all the Democrats voting for it. It now will go to Judiciary, but is not at this time scheduled. We will let you know when it is scheduled..
We were greatly OUTNUMBERED by those in support of the bill. Our side had 8 testify, and they outnumbered us 6 for each one of these good people. They packed the room!
We need to ALL STAND UP AND BE HEARD.
The Republicans on the Judiciary Committee will vote against the bill. So please contact these Democrats to get their support (others are against us). Call: Javier Martinez, Eliseo Alcon, Daymon Ely, Georgene Louis and Matthew McQueen.
There is not much time. Also contact your own legislator for they will probably hear this bill on the House floor after Judiciary Committee unless we thwart the passage in that committee.
CALL THEM.
EMAIL THEM.
But let them know!
YOU ARE LOBBYISTS, PLEASE DO YOUR PART. Be polite, and point out it is a badly written bill with NO SAFEGUARDS!
