Netanyahu Addresses AIPAC Amidst Shifting Dynamics

The idea of a “two-state solution” to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians was notably absent from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s video address to the 2017 AIPAC Conference Monday evening. However, the conference continued into Tuesday with several senior AIPAC officials hinting that they were eager to get back into a discussion about the “two-state solution” despite the lack of enthusiasm for the idea among ordinary Israelis and Palestinians.

PA Prepares for Diplomatic Push at Arab League Summit

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas spoke in Brussels on Monday at a joint press conference with European Union foreign-policy chief Federica Mogherini, saying among other things that “We are hoping the people of Israel will not miss this opportunity to make peace.” The press conference came amidst a flurry of meetings Abbas held this week with European leaders ahead of the Arab League Summit in Jordan.

Israeli Military Relations Expanding Internationally

Israeli aircraft, pilots and ground crew kicked off a week of intensive drills with colleagues from several countries in Greece on Monday, including the United Arab Emirates, as well as Italy and the US. The exercise, code-named Iniohos 2017, will also incorporate units from the Greek Navy and Army. In related news, the Indian Army is reportedly moving ahead with a $1 billion purchase of Spike anti-tank missiles from Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.

Iran Inviting Russia to Use Military Bases

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told Reuters on Tuesday that the clerical regime in Teheran has informed its Russian allies that Iranian military bases would be available to Russian forces on a “case by case basis” in order to facilitate “anti-terrorism” operations in the Middle East. He added that Syria would be at the top of the list of things to be discussed during high level meetings this week between Iranian and Russian officials in Moscow.

Haredi Sex Crime Suspects Rounded Up

Israeli police announced on Tuesday that following weeks of undercover work, an arrest operation Monday morning had netted 22 Ultra-Orthodox (haredi) men suspected of various sex crimes in the cities of Jerusalem, Beit Shemesh, Betar Illit and Bnei Brak. The Police began their investigation by arresting members of the haredi community’s committee for internal monitoring of suspected sex offenses and seizing their records, following years of complaints that these committees were notoriously lax in enforcing rules meant to deal with the situation while refusing to pass cases on to government authorities.
