I got this exciting news from Pastor Don Kimbro!!!!!! PTL!!!! So very blessed to have this Man of God as a mentor!!! Happy 81st Birthday Brother!!! I pray that I have the energy you have when I am 81!!!!!
Good morning Dewey,
Welcome back from Indiana. Interested to hear what God placed on your heart while you were there.
I wanted to share with you some good and exciting news as I approach my 81st birthday. As I told others when I shared this, no eye-rolling please! No drum rolls, either! A simple “ta-da” will suffice. Haha.
I have been asked to join the pastoral staff of Koinonia Church, located at 10405 Comanche NE. A long-time friend, Brad Ficklin, is the senior pastor. Brad and I served together in the early 90’s at Church on the Rock when he was our Campus Minister. In fact, Brad met his wife, Heather, at Church on the Rock. He often says, “I led her to Christ, then married her!”
The church is a small body of believers (125 members) that in my view is on the verge of going bigger as they are growing out of their present location. We have recently secured 25 acres in the east canyon at mile marker 1 on Hwy. 333 (Old Rt. 66). It is in the process of becoming our new evangelistic center, retreat and concert grounds. It is only 10 minutes from our house so it is easy for folks in the NE Heights to get there. I encourage you to come and see this beautiful mountainous location and the transformation that is taking place from old riding stables and a feed store to a lovely worship center. In fact, we will be having Good Friday services there from 11:00 – 1:00.
I will be on pastoral assignment to help Brad develop those areas of ministry that will help free him up to pursue his calling of preaching the gospel. He is an evangelist by calling and a highly gifted preacher. His heart is winning the lost and teaching others how to win the lost, as is mine. My responsibilities will include teaching, discipleship, ministry to seniors, and mentoring other ministry leaders. The attached flyer announces our first event at our new location. You, my friend, are invited!!!
In addition to the above, Dorothy and I have been asked to represent a wonderful and solid ministry to the persecuted church around the world, The Voice of the Martyrs. Our dear friends, Greg and Pam Spackman will join us. We will represent VOM in New Mexico, mostly in Albuquerque. Our duties will center around helping to inform the church of the persecution that is taking place around the world with our brothers and sisters in Christ and their need for prayer and support (Hebrews 13:3).
So there you have our good news. I hope you will rejoice and pray with us as we move forward. How long will these old folks be able to do the above? We are reminded that is up to God, for He is the one who determines our days (Psalm 139:16). There is no doubt that we have become “older and slower” but Jesus seems to be O.K. with our pace!
When one of my heroes, author, preacher, pastor and theologian John L. Stott, was asked on his death bed how he would like to be prayed for he replied, “Pray that I will be faithful to Jesus Christ, until my last breath.” I am not on my death bed but I can’t improve upon that prayer request for myself, as well. Thank you all for your prayers and encouragement. We love you all.
