Tensions High on Syrian Border Following Airstrikes

Reports early Friday indicated that an Israeli Patriot air defense battery had shot down a reconnaissance drone sent over the border by the Assad regime amidst heightened tensions along Israel’s border with Syria. The incident occurred hours after Moscow issued a statement condemning alleged Israeli airstrikes on an Iranian weapons depot near Damascus International Airport as a “gross violation of Syrian sovereignty.”

Lawmakers Launch Congressional Israel Victory Caucus

A group of lawmakers in Washington DC held a press conference Wednesday to announce the launch of the Congressional Israel Victory Caucus (CIVC). Led by founding members Reps. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and Bill Johnson (R-OH) and in cooperation with several pro-Israel NGOs, the Caucus has the stated purpose of ending the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians by convincing the Palestinians to accept defeat and negotiate a settlement on that premise.

UNESCO Vote on Jerusalem Looms

The Executive Board of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is set to vote next Tuesday on a resolution which denies the Jewish and/or Israeli connections to and sovereignty over Jerusalem. Israeli diplomats fear that even European nations, which have traditionally supported Israel’s sovereignty at least over the western neighborhoods of Jerusalem, might side with the Arab countries which drafted the latest resolution.

Pope Visits Egypt Amidst Uptick in Violence Against Christians

Pope Francis was scheduled to land in Cairo Friday amidst a spike in violent attacks against Christians in predominantly Moslem countries all over the Middle East and North Africa. Earlier this week, he said he hopes the visit will assist in efforts to improve the dialogue between Christianity and Islam as well as serving as a “consolation and…encouragement to all Christians in the Middle East”.

Israel’s population Stands at 8.68 Million

Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics released its annual report on the population Thursday, saying that as Israel prepares to celebrate the 69th anniversary of Independence Day next week there are 8.68 million citizens, including approximately 6.484 million Jews (74.7% of the total population) and 1.808 million Arabs (20.8%) with another 388,000 (4.5%) belonging to various minority groups. The population enjoyed a net growth of 159,000, making a 1.9% increase.
