“Begging For War”
As you know, North Korea reportedly tested a hydrogen bomb over the weekend. As the ominous developments continue to come out of North Korea, every news outlet should ask this fundamental question: Why are we filling our airtime with officials from the Clinton, Bush and Obama Administrations, seeking their “wisdom” for what President Trump ought to do?
These so-called “experts” are responsible for creating the situation we have now. Twenty-five years of “leaders” continually operating on the assumption that war is unacceptable has left the United States with no good options and a myriad of terrible choices.
- You go to war and it is possible that the death toll will be extraordinary.
- You could engage in an economic war, which will hurt the U.S. economy, and, if effective, may still lead to war with North Korea.
- You put another band aid on this boil and accept nuclear blackmail. It won’t be long before the North Koreans have missiles aimed at half a dozen U.S. cities and start demanding that we evacuate bases in South Korea and Japan.Plus, multiple other nations led by fanatics will rush to get their nuclear weapons too. Pyongyang and Tehran are allies. Any nuclear development North Korea makes, Iran also makes.
I saw three quotes over the weekend which help to explain the crosscurrents in this debate:
- An unnamed national security official said, “The North Koreans have a (U.S.) city-buster.”
- During an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council, Ambassador Nikki Haley said that Kim Jong-un’s “abusive use of missiles, and his nuclear threats show that he is begging for war.”
- Finally, multiple commentators on virtually every network responded to President Trump’s tweet about suspending trade with China. In one way or another, they all whined, “But the new iPhone will cost twice as much!”Keep this mind: If North Korea launches an intercontinental ballistic missile, experts say the president might have 10 minutes to consider his response. Yet if a missile hits a U.S. city and a half million people are killed, all these pundits worried about the price of their iPhone will be blaming Donald Trump.
DACA Done
Attorney General Jeff Sessions held a press conference this morning announcing the Trump Administration’s intention to “wind down” the deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) program.
DACA was a quasi-amnesty established by an Obama executive order — after Obama publicly said more than 20 times that he did not have the authority to unilaterally change the law.
Ten state attorneys general have filed suit demanding that a federal court strike down the executive order as unconstitutional. The courts have already struck down a similar Obama program, and the expectation is that they will do so again.
This is not an insignificant point, my friends. The Constitution matters. The rule of law matters. In fact, the contents of a letter former President Obama left for President Trump in the Oval Office were released this weekend by CNN. In that letter, Obama wrote this:
“Third, we are just temporary occupants of this office. That makes us guardians of those democratic institutions and traditions — like rule of law, separation of powers, equal protection and civil liberties — that our forebears fought and bled for. . . it’s up to us to leave those instruments of our democracy at least as strong as we found them.
Nice lecture. It’s a shame Barack Obama did not demonstrate that respect for the rule of law and the separation of powers when he was in office.
In spite of the left’s mass hysteria, the Trump Administration’s suspension of DACA is the compassionate approach. The six-month phase out is intended to give Congress time to create an appropriate legislative solution that is compassionate and helps solve our illegal immigration problem.
That last point is the fly in the ointment. Speaker Paul Ryan has already talked to Nancy Pelosi on how they can work together to renew DACA. Senators Lindsey Graham and John McCain are promising to move swiftly.
If Republican leaders work with liberals and progressives to renew this program while not funding the president’s border wall or taking other steps to ensure that we don’t have another million “Dreamers” a few years from now, they will blow up the conservative movement.
I know many of them think the exact opposite is the case. But they should ponder how it would look to conservatives if the first major initiative that passes Congress is not a repeal of Obamacare, not funding for the border wall, not tax reform, but preserving an Obama initiative loved by the left. Stay tuned.
Back To School
As the new school year gets underway, I want to encourage parents to be especially vigilant about what their children are learning in the classroom. The educational establishment is dominated by the left, and increasingly the far, far left.
Sadly, reports indicate that many public school teachers are members of radical, violent left-wing groups like BAMN and Antifa. There is certainly a lot of evidence to support it.
One middle school teacher in Berkeley is facing charges for inciting a riot. Remember the journalism professor who called for “muscle” to remove a student reporter covering a campus demonstration? There is no shortage of wannabe fascists in the faculty lounge who compare conservatives to Nazis and who support violence against those with whom they disagree.
Don’t take anything for granted. Ask your children what their teachers and professors are telling them. Google the names of their teachers and professors. Know what your tax dollars and tuition fees are paying for.
