From our Dear Friend Mercy Alarid of Passion Church in Albuquerque:
We are so good at focusing on specks and ignoring planks….
We make a big deal about inappropriate kneeling and minimize the injustice that prompted the protests in the first place.
We are adamant about honoring the flag but have no problem with a public servant dishonoring people protected by the Stars and Stripes.
We roll our eyes at those who insist we stand when the national anthem is played as if their patriotism makes them racists. Meanwhile, we do nothing of substance ourselves to change the reality of inequality in this country.
It is time to stop arguing about knees and anthems and deal with the pettiness, racism and apathy in our own hearts. Only then will we see clearly that unity in what matters solves more problems than arguments over trivialities.
