When we think of worship, we may think of a location like a church building or perhaps a small gathering in a home. Most of us go to church to worship the Lord. We sing songs and hymns of praise and adoration because our desire is to realize the presence of Jesus in our midst and let Him know how much we love Him.
Worship often produces feelings of great joy and excitement and well it should. Emotional responses to the glory and presence of God have always been appropriate, when done in order and reverence. God has given us the subjective responses such as tears, laughter, applause, singing and even shouting to name a few. He has made us in such a way that I don’t believe we can think or contemplate true spiritual things without some exercise of this ability.
But what happens if we fail to achieve a certain feeling? Suppose the hymns or praise choruses are not to our liking? Or we just don’t feel very good at the time? Have we failed to worship God? Must we wait for another time? Perhaps there’s more to worshipping God than what we may experience in a worship service. Perhaps the meaning of the word itself will help us.
In the original Greek language of the New Testament, the word for worship is proskuneo. It’s actually made up of two words, pros which means “toward” and kuneo, which means “to kiss.” Put them together and it literally says, “to kiss toward.” Some have even described the word as, “blowing kisses to God.”
I like that. How about you? He is worthy of all of our love and affection. What better way to show it when we worship by blowing a kiss or two to the King. I’m sure He will respond with a big smile!
