Genesis 2:18-25 (NKJV): And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” 19 Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him. 21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. 23 And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.” 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Many Scholars say that Genesis 2 is a retelling of the Creation account. That may be true but we do see something even more here. We see that God saw that man, Adam, was alone. He wasn’t alone in the sense that there was not interaction with anyone, because God, Jesus, and The Holy Spirit were all there, as we saw in Genesis 1:1-2, 26 and John 1:1-2. He was lonely for companionship for someone/something like himself. Again, God wanted to show His Love for us by sending a companion.

It would almost seem like God made a mistake by creating animals to be our companions. However, there is something about having a pet or pets, that they become like family to us. Many who have pets know the unconditional love they seem to bring us. The animals also bring us a source of food as well as help with fertilization for our plants. So, this would show that He did not make a mistake, but again, it was something He had set up for us prior to creating us.

God wanted to create a companion for us to help us to learn love. He gave us someone to be with us for life. There are some who are not called to be married, we still need to have others around us that are able to pray for us, keep us accountable, and fellowship with us. It would seem that He wanted to teach us love, by having others like us around too. Remember, He said He wanted to, “..create man in our image..” (Genesis !:26).

Taking a look at what He did for us in this passage we are looking at today, it would seem that He wanted us to cherish the marriage relationship. We are in a time where marriage is not taken as seriously as it once was. We have seen an increase in divorce, which God hates. (Click here for Scriptures about divorce) We see that the marriage relationship has diminished with the acceptance of homosexual marriage, which, we see that God despises. (Click here for scriptures on homosexuality) We even see that many couples are “cohabitating” instead of getting married (Click here for scriptures on cohabitating)

We need to see why God had an ultimate plan for marriage. Taking a look at His commandments, we see that He said to have no other Gods before him (Exodus 20:3; 23:13). He also told us to be faithful to our spouses (1 Corinthians 7:1-11) Looking at other areas on marriage, (Click here for scripture on Marriage) it appears that the marriage relationship is one that would be an example of how our relationship should be with Him, faithful, not following other gods or doctrine, learning to do what pleases Him, etc.

Wouldn’t it be better to learn to have a True Relationship with Him, Our Provider, Protector, Our Creator, Our Heavenly Father, who is Righteous, Holy, Perfect and All Knowing? That’s His desire for us.

We should look to Him daily to seek a relationship with Him. I want to encourage you to seek Him today, if you haven’t already. If you need help, have questions or need direction in this regard, please, feel free to let me know.
