What are some Bible verses dealing with anger, money, or marriage?

Jan 25, 2018

Q: How can I find verses in the Bible dealing with things like anger, or money, or marriage? I remember from Sunday School that the Bible talks about a lot of things I’d probably find useful, but I don’t know where to start. — C.P.

A: People are sometimes surprised to discover that the Bible is actually a very practical book. Not only does it tell us about God, but it also tells us in very practical ways how He wants us to live. The Bible says, “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life” (2 Peter 1:3).

How can you discover Bible passages like this? One way is to turn to sections of the Bible that focus on daily living. For many years, I made it a habit to read a chapter a day from the book of Proverbs in the Old Testament, which teaches us much about daily living. Jesus’ words in the Sermon on the Mount (which you’ll find in Matthew 5-7) and the closing chapters of some of Paul’s letters also are helpful. Remember the Psalmist’s words: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105).

Another way to find Bible passages you may remember hearing is to make use of other resources. A concordance, for example, lists every word in the Bible and tells you where it can be found. A Bible dictionary includes articles on topics found in the Bible; study Bibles include explanatory notes on major themes. Your local Christian bookstore can help you find these; some also may be available on the internet.

Don’t, however, pick out a few passages — but neglect the rest of the Bible. The whole Bible is God’s Word, “and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).
