Q: Does the Bible say anything about life on other planets? I’m fascinated by all the discoveries about the universe that have been made in recent years. Maybe we’re not alone in the universe after all. — N.McC.
A: No, the Bible doesn’t say anything about the possibility of life on other planets. Its main concern is with human life on this planet, including our problems and our future. This doesn’t mean life can’t exist on other planets, for it well might; the Bible simply doesn’t tell us. But the Bible does tell us two very important truths that I hope you’ll remember. First, it reminds us that everything in the universe — absolutely everything — owes its existence to God. Personally, I’m overwhelmed by what astronomers and other scientists have discovered about space during my lifetime — countless galaxies, incredible distances, phenomena we can barely understand. Yet nothing is as profound as those first words of the Bible: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). God is that great! The other truth we need to remember is that although God created us, we have rebelled against him and chosen to go our own way. Think of it: We have rejected God, our creator — and we have paid a terrible price for our folly. This is why we need Christ, for only He can reconcile us to God, and only He can give us hope that we will go to be with Him in Heaven forever. Is your faith and hope in Him? Someday all our questions will be answered — including this one. But listen: We are not alone! God is with us, and life’s greatest joy comes from knowing Him and living for His glory. The Psalmist declared, “If I go up to the heavens, you are there” (Psalm 139:8). ======== (Send your queries to “My Answer,” c/o Billy Graham, Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, 1 Billy Graham Parkway, Charlotte, N.C., 28201; call 1-(877) 2-GRAHAM, or visit the Web site for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association: www.billygraham.org.) |
