Governor Susana Martinez Vetoes Pay Raises for Politicians
Santa Fe, NM — Today, Governor Susana Martinez vetoed legislation that would have squandered more than $100,000 in taxpayer funds a year on pay raises for politicians.
“Through a relentless commitment to responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars – like balancing budgets and cutting taxes – New Mexico has a budget surplus of hundreds of millions of dollars,” Governor Martinez said. “I will not waste a dime of it on doling out taxpayer dollars on pay raises for politicians.”
Senate Bill 176 was sponsored by Senator John Arthur Smith (D-Deming). Senator Smith’s bill would have spent $108,500 a year on pay increases for politicians like statewide elected officials and public regulation commissioners.
