Q: Some of us have been debating this question: What was the most important event in human history? — Z.L. A: No doubt you could make a long list of possibilities: a great scientific discovery, a dramatic medical breakthrough, a giant leap forward in transportation or technology, a revolution in economics or politics or agriculture — the list could be almost endless. But what took place almost 2000 years ago on that hill called Calvary outside Jerusalem — along with the resurrection of Jesus three days later — exceeds them all. If Jesus had never gone to the cross, you and I would have no hope — no hope for forgiveness and new life right now, and no hope for an eternity in God’s presence. But Jesus did go to the cross, and Jesus did rise from the dead — and they form the most important event in human history. Jesus’ death was not a tragic mistake or an unexpected accident. It was part of the eternal plan of God — a plan that had its source in God’s love, and was designed for our good. Jesus was the sinless Son of God — but on the cross all our sins were transferred to Him, and He became the final sacrifice for our sins. The Bible says, “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us” (1 John 3:16). As we remember Jesus’ death and resurrection during these special days, take time to ponder the profound love that caused Him to give His life for you. Then thank Him for that love, and by faith commit your life to Him. God’s Word is true: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). ======== (This column is based on the words and writings of the late Rev.
