Israel and World Await Trump Policy on Iran

US President Donald Trump was scheduled to make an address from the White House at 2 PM (9 PM Jerusalem time) Tuesday about his plans regarding the JCPOA nuclear deal with Iran. Officials in Israel and other Middle Eastern countries were preparing to make their own statements in reaction to Trump’s address, even as world markets for oil and other commodities showed signs of high volatility and regional military forces quietly increased their levels of readiness for all possible scenarios.

Netanyahu in Cyprus for Three-Way Summit

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spent the day in Cyprus Tuesday, meeting with Cypriot Prime Minister Nicos Anastasiades and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to discuss a variety of topics including natural gas pipelines from Israel’s offshore fields and traversing the waters and territory of the other countries to European markets. As always, the topic of Iran and its threat to the region were also on the agenda, along with other defense and security issues, relations with Turkey and Egypt, tourism and trade.

Hezbollah Tightens Political Grip on Lebanon

The Shi’ite terror militia Hezbollah further cemented the grip it, and by extension its Iranian sponsor, holds on the Lebanese State in recent parliamentary elections last week. Official results of the polls announced over the weekend saw sharp gains for candidates from Hezbollah’s political wing and it , with its leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, congratulating his followers for “a very big political, parliamentary, and moral victory for the choice of resistance.”

Paraguay to Move Embassy to Jerusalem

The Latin American country of Paraguay announced on Monday evening that it will move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem by the end of May, following the lead of the US and Guatemala. “Wonderful news as the international recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital gathers momentum,” Tweeted an Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesperson.

Israel On Track for Another Record Year for Tourism

Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics published numbers this week showing that there were already over 1 million visitors to the Jewish State in the first three months of 2018, raising the possibility of 2018 breaking the record of 3.5 million tourist visits set in 2017. “Further to the opening of new direct air routes and new markets from India and Brazil in the last month, we are witnessing record levels of incoming tourists,” said Tourism Minister Yariv Levin. “Tourism continues to contribute significantly to the Israeli economy and the labor market.”

Israel has neither the power nor the motivation to significantly influence the outcome of the war for control of all the pieces of Syria. Israel’s objective in Syria is to prevent Iran from building military facilities there that increase its ability to attack Israel. The only way Israel can achieve this is by destroying any such facilities that Iran builds, or by convincing Iran not to build any threatening facility out of fear that Israel will destroy it.
