We Must Preach the Gospel to Ourselves

The Cross-Centered Life
by Joni Eareckson Tada
Dear Dewey,
“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.”
Colossians 3:5-6
I enjoy my morning routine – two kiwis and a hot bran cereal followed by a cup of coffee at work. I haven’t altered that routine in years. That’s because we build habits around the things that matter to us. This is an important principle to remember as we seek to daily build our lives around the Gospel. C.J. Mahaney writes, “Do you want to live a cross centered life? A cross centered life is made up of cross centered days.”*
My friend C.J. tells us how to keep the flame of the Gospel burning brightly in the drizzle of our everyday lives. As I begin my day, you and I must preach the Gospel to ourselves — our audience is our heart, reminding us of those things that matter most to God. Next, memorize the Gospel — God wants us to tuck His promises into our hearts so that wherever we are, we can be strengthened by their eternal truth. Everyday we should pray the Gospel — never forget to thank God for the forgiveness of sins, the cross of Christ; always acknowledge transgressions and speak to your Lord about eternal things. Finally, sing the Gospel — lift to the Lord songs that center on the cross. Choose a worship CD that includes a variety of songs about what Jesus accomplished on the cross. And don’t forget to study the Gospel — it’s the only way to grow in your passion for Jesus and all that He has done; never be content with your current grasp of the Gospel.
It’s hard to put to death old ways, but these five practical recommendations from C.J. Mahaney will give you a clearer understanding of how to make everyday cross centered. You can’t do it on your own, though. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you. It will mean your life will totally focus on Jesus’ cross!
Jesus keep me near the cross, hoping, trusting ever…
Blessings,
Joni and Friends
