Are Christians expected to be Christ-like?

Jul 16, 2018

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: My whole life I have heard that Christians are expected to be Christ-like. Is that really possible? — D.I.

A: It is God’s will for His followers to become more like Christ. He came to show us the way, but it can only happen as we submit every area of our lives to His authority. The key word is “submit.” It is an unpopular word particularly in today’s self-indulgent culture. The idea of handing control over to someone else (even God) goes against the grain of our natures. This is usually the first spiritual battle a new believer encounters — surrendering self-will for God’s will.

Many people argue that it is difficult to discern the will of God, but the problem isn’t discernment; it is unwillingness to submit. If people will read His Word and listen for His instruction with an obedient heart, He will lead. If we reject His authority, revealed in Scripture, we will never become more like Him. Satan will be the winner and we will be the losers. We will never experience the joy of knowing God’s plan for us.

Do others see something of Christ in your life? Do they see a “family resemblance” to the Lord by the way you live? If the answer is ‘no,’ do not let another day go by without committing yourself to His plan. Be honest about whatever it is that keeps you from that commitment — and then repent of it, and commit yourself to live under His authority. You will never regret it. If you are ignorant of God’s Word, you will always be ignorant of God’s will. Reflect on Psalm 40:8: “I delight to do Your will, O my God, and Your law is within my heart.”
