Matthew 5:14 (NKJV): You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
With this picture He is painting, He essentially is saying, we are reflections of Him. We are little shimmers of Hope in people’s lives when they have no Hope. We can shed light on what people are dealing with, because of our experiences in life with Jesus.
We can think about it this way, the sun produces Earth’s light throughout the day. The moon reflects that sunlight at night, so we can se during the night. Reflect on that for a minute, the moon reflects the sunlight to give us light at night.
Now think about this, if you remember, in the Book of Acts, Chapter 24, it talks about how the Disciples of the time, both Jesus’ Disciples and those who became their disciples, were called Christians or Followers of The Way, depending on the translation you read. This was supposed to mock them for believing in Jesus. Essentially, it is a term calling them/us little Christs. Does that mean we are exactly like Jesus? No, but in a sense it is a great compliment.
Now, if we parallel the Sun and the Moon with Jesus and Us, we can think of Jesus, The Son, to be like the sun and Us, as Christians, to be like the moon. Jesus brings The True Light and we reflect that light in our lives. In other words, our lives should bring Hope into others lives because of what He has done in ours.
Are you like that city on the hill that shines light to a weary traveler? Are you reflecting change in your life because of what and how Jesus has worked in your life? If not, why not? Now would be a great time to start following The True Light and become a reflection of Jesus to others.
