Poll Finds Plurality of New Mexicans Support Abortion Restrictions.

69.8% of respondents oppose abortion after 5 months of pregnancy.
Santa Fe, NM — Today, New Mexico Alliance for Life releases a survey conducted from a random sample of 843 adult respondents across the state, which indicates a vast majority of New Mexicans support a pro-life position, despite self-identifying as pro-choice. An overwhelming majority (69.8%) of respondents are opposed to abortion after the 5th month of pregnancy.
45.8% of respondents self-identified as pro-choice wtih 44.4% pro-life.  72.4% (610 respondents) oppose doctors, nurses, or hospitals being forced to participate in abortions. Over 67.1% (566 respondents) believe a parent should be involved in a minor daughter’s decision, 69.8% (or 588 respondents) support a ban on abortion after 5 months, and 62.4% (526 respondents) oppose taxpayer funding of abortion.
“An overwhelming majority of New Mexicans, including women and pro-choice New Mexicans oppose elective late-term abortion in our state and oppose the radical aspects of House Bill 51,” said NMAFL Executive Director Elisa Martinez. “The extreme positions of some of our state legislators behind H.B. 51 and pro-abortion activists are completely out-of-touch with the majority of New Mexicans, in the areas of parental notification, late-term abortion and protecting medical professionals.”
The poll was conducted on the evening of Monday, December 17, 2018, by Campaign Marketing Strategies (CMS), by automated landline survey dialing 40,000 randomly selected voters throughout New Mexico. The survey garnered 843 respondents, resulting in a margin of error of +/-3.44%.

The protections which are favored by a majority of  New Mexicans is not reflected in House Bill 51, which flatly strips away conscience protections, parental consent, and allows non-medically necessary abortion up to the date of birth.

The poll is in line with national polling, showing 3 in 4 Americans support abortion restrictions after the first trimester, 3 in 4 oppose taxpayer dollars funding abortions, and 55% in favor of conscience protections for medical professionals.
