House Republicans Thank New Mexicans for Defeat of Anti-Mining Bill
Controversial House Bill 255 Pulled Off the Floor, Likely Dead
Santa Fe – House Republicans expressed gratitude to over 1,000 New Mexicans who showed up to speak against House Bill 255, an anti-mining bill supported by House Democrats. House Bill 255 (HB 255) was brought up for debate on Sunday but was withdrawn for lack of support before a vote. HB 255 attempted to arbitrarily raise the amount companies have to put forward in order to operate mines in New Mexico. The mining industry supports over 4,000 jobs in New Mexico and generates over $370 million for the state.
“Make no mistake, the people of Grant County and all of New Mexico made their voices heard and it made all the difference,” said Rep. Rebecca Dow (R-Truth or Consequences). “We are so grateful for all those who took the time to stand up for our jobs, our economy and our way of life.”
Last Friday, over 1,000 New Mexicans gathered in Silver City to speak out against HB 255 and other anti-mining legislation. The public comment portion of the meeting lasted over seven hours.
