For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.

1 Corinthians 13:12 (NASB)

“Now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.” In Paul’s day, Corinth was a famous manufacturing center for mirrors made of polished metal. By gazing intently into the surface sheen, the viewer could have a general—if vague—impression of what he or she looked like. But reflection was at best a dim shadow of the full-blooded reality.

The word Paul used for dimly is the Greek term for a puzzle, riddle, or enigma. That’s what life is like, Paul is saying. Even for a Christian. Yes, we have the Word of God and the Spirit of God to guide and teach us. But let’s face it, we are only catching the merest glimpse of the full, eternal reality in Christ. Life on this side of heaven is only a dim reflection of the true reality yet to be.

Lord Jesus, help me to gaze and gaze upon You this day. You are the One who holds all the answers. You are the One who can fulfill each longing. You are my satisfaction. I know my earthly vision is often dim—but my prayer today is that I will see You more clearly!
