Deuteronomy 5:16
Honor your father and your mother as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
What does it mean to honor our fathers and mother’s? We live in a culture that seems to have lost its honor. We see the disrespect everywhere we turn, especially in the younger generations. How do we turn this tide? It starts with us. We have to teach and model respect and obedience. We must not speak any unkind words, have bad attitudes or harmful actions against others, especially our parents. And as parents, we have a responsibility to teach our children what it means to know, love and follow God. I lost my father when I was 13 to a work related accident. In the short amount of time we had him, he taught us what respect was. He taught us what it was to take care of your family. He instilled the core values in us. My home Pastor modeled for me in my later years what it meant to have a relationship with Christ. He was my spiritual father. I’m now a father of 7 children 4 step and 3 biological. I have the same responsibilities to each child. Their lives depend on us as fathers to teach them in the way they should go so they can have long lives in the land and eternal life with Christ.
