Morning Inspiration! The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught. Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat. Mark 6:30–31
My years in ministry, as a lay-volunteer & a Pastor, have been an amazing experience that blesses me beyond anything I can explain. Yet I’ve learned the hard way, that burnout & exhaustion are a constant danger. We are much more vulnerable to frustration & spiritual attack when we are overly tired. A heart to serve Jesus, brings ultra-awareness of the overwhelming needs of the many God places in our path! It’s hard to say no to someone who is hurting. My natural desire is to keep going. I always say (only half-joking) “I’ll rest when I’m dead.” This Scripture shows that Jesus knew better! He worked longer & harder than anyone else; but then hid himself away for breaks. Jesus taught His followers to do the same. He once said “The poor will always be with us.” Even when the needs & demands were overwhelming, He modeled the human need for rest & refreshment. Exhaustion can bring on a hardness in our heart, anger & sin. Jesus showed us that once in a while, it’s ok to say “Not right now.” I’m taking a few weeks off, & some of my dear brothers will be writing your Morning Inspirations while I’m relaxing. Praying you will make an effort to get the rest you need soon.
