The Business of Doing the Impossible
by Joni Eareckson Tada
The company of the prophets said to Elisha, “Look, the place where we meet with you is too small for us. Let us go to the Jordan, where each of us can get a pole; and let us build a place there for us to meet.” And he said, “Go.” Then one of them said, “Won’t you please come with your servants?” “I will,” Elisha replied. And he went with them.
They went to the Jordan and began to cut down trees. As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron axhead fell into the water. “Oh no, my lord!” he cried out. “It was borrowed!” The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw it there, and made the iron float. “Lift it out,” he said. Then the man reached out his hand and took it.
2 Kings 6:1-7
Today’s Scripture tells a story about a man chopping down a tree with a borrowed ax. Suddenly, the axhead flew off the handle and landed in a deep stream. The man was distraught. What could he do? Wisely, he asked the prophet of God for help. Elisha made the iron float, and the man was able to reach in the water and retrieve it. That’s quite a story! An axhead that floats? Everyone knows that’s utterly impossible. But that’s the point of the whole story. God wants you to know He is in the business of doing the impossible.
If God is calling you today to undertake a work far exceeding your strength—if it seems absurd to even attempt it—remember that floating axhead, and let your faith rise to the occasion! The God of Elisha still lives, and He lives to help you. He’ll provide the strength and ability—but He wants you to provide the faith. So believe God, move out ahead, and just watch the iron swim!
Dear Lord, please forgive me for giving up and walking away from situations that seem impossible to me. Forgive me for dropping certain people and certain problems off my prayer list because I can’t imagine how to resolve the difficulties. You are God. You are mighty. Anything is possible for You.
