Some afflictions come and go, but others are here to stay. Whether it’s paralysis or chronic pain, God will give you the courage you need to deal with what is permanent.
When You Trust Him
by Joni Eareckson Tada
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:5-6
The other day, I was backing my wheelchair out of my van on a very steep hill. Take my word for it; it was really scary. My husband Ken, was behind me, saying, “It’s okay, Joni. I’m here. I’ve got you!” Right then, I had a choice. I could either make my husband look good by trusting him and backing out, or I could make him look bad by giving in to my fear and refusing to budge. I budged! I put my power chair in reverse and proceeded down the steep ramp.
In spite of my queasy feelings, I wasn’t about to convey to onlookers that my husband was untrustworthy or unable to help. In the same way, we glorify our God when we trust Him to do what He promises to do—especially when all human possibilities are exhausted. And the harder it seems it will be for Him to fulfill His promise, the better He looks when you trust Him.
Lord, I want others to see how much I trust and rely on You. I know it may mean being in some scary situations where my faith will be stretched and tested. But I want people to see how reliable and faithful You are—and how You answer prayers in ways I could never predict.
