Israel Enters Jewish High Holidays
Sunday evening was the start of Rosh Hashanah, the first of the Jewish High Holidays, followed by Yom Kippur and Succot (Feast of Tabernacles) later in the month. A very large percentage of Israeli Jews, including many who self-identify as “secular” and/or “traditional” celebrate these holidays with various levels of observance as they are legal work holidays. In Jerusalem and other large cities, neighborhood synagogues and community centers organize various activities that people from all walks of life and levels of observance can participate in comfortably and the country also sees a large influx of Jewish people from around the world who come to spend the High Holiday’s in Israel.
